BIOGRAPHY OF FATHER PAUL VAN CHI CHU,
CATHOLIC PRIEST AND MUSIC COMPOSER FAMILY BACKGROUND Paul Văn Chi Chu, also known as Paul Văn Chi, Văn Chi, Văn Uyên, Thu Văn, was born on May 14, 1949 in Ninh Bình Vietnam, the youngest of six children, three boys and three girls in his family. One of his brothers, Joseph Chu Văn Nghi, was also ordained a priest. Paul Văn Chi’s father, Chu Xuân, died a few months after Paul Văn Chi’s birth, leaving his mother, Chu Thị Dịu, to support and educate 6 children.
In 1954 the family escaped from the North Vietnam and resettled in the South at Gia Kiệm, Long Khánh. Paul Văn Chi helped his mother sell bananas at the local market, and his sisters worked at a rubber plantation to help educate their 2 brothers.
